The Chandavila Museum is known as the “Lázaro Gumiel Museum.” It is located in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, in a spectacular natural setting.
Lázaro Gumiel, born in Villalengua (Zaragoza), a sculptor specializing in the carving of religious images, lived in La Codosera Castle from 1945 until his death in 1977. He was deeply involved with the town, donating several works to it, such as the carving of the Sacred Heart and the image of Our Lady of Sorrows. He founded a sacred art workshop for young people from the town, and his remains are now housed in the Chandavila Sanctuary.
In his memory, a tribute exhibition has been opened in a room attached to the sanctuary, in a single-story building on the left side of the church. The exhibition room contains twelve unpainted wooden images measuring 170 cm and 160 cm. Other interesting items on display include two charcoal sketches, 4 meters long by 2 meters wide, one of which depicts The Crucifixion and the second, The Lord in the Tomb. A sketch, drawn on paper and colored inks, corresponds to The Great Monstrance, located in the Church of La Concepción in Madrid. It was made with 33 kg of silver, half a glass of gold, 200 g of platinum, 800 brilliants, and 1,500 colored stones.
